Butter

In 1785, the Society for the Promotion of Agriculture in South Carolina offered a premium for growing madder.  Thomas Jefferson and Dolley Madison,
strongly urged farmers to raise this useful plant.

The lightest skein is from hickory hulls and the others are from madder.
The lovely rose skeins will be added to Saturday's shop update at 7p EST.

These skeins are on Wren House Luxe ~ a sublime yarn created with
baby alpaca, cashmere, and silk.

It's delicious..like butter.

Wren House DIY weaving class over Valentine's weekend.
The spring tree came along with the rainbow assortment of reclaimed yarns.

'Queen Red Lime'

the zinnias I want to grow this summer.

Yarn, weaving, dyeing, dreaming of Spring was a great way to spend
a cold, snowy Valentine's weekend!

Yarn Along..

At the beginning of the the year I ripped out all my unfinished knits.
Kind of cleans the slate for the new year..

Then I happened upon a bag of yarn in a thrift store this week.

It contained one (almost) finished mitt,
One and a half balls of yarn,
and
(gasp)
the pattern.

Of course I bought the bag!

The yarn is fabulous ~ The Fibre Co. : Road to China

So I sat down and studied the mitt.

Rip it ~ or ~ knit it.

KNIT!!

It was so much fun trying to figure out the size and gauge the knitter used.
I got to thinking about the lone mitt and how it ended up in a thrift store.

Why don't I feel so much love and curiosity for my
unfinished knits?

The other mitt will be finished soon.
I'll be a bit sad when they are finished but the journey was sure fun!

Cheering on Spring.

Knitting with my mentor's gorgeous hand spun yarn.
Perfect ear warmer for someone who can't get a hat over her bun of hair.

Let's Roc

Distaff Day,
also called Roc day, is January 7.
Many St. Distaff's Day gatherings are held, large and small, throughout local fiber community.
The distaff, or rock, used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women's work.

In many European cultural traditions,
women resumed their household work after the twelve days of Christmas

Women of all classes would spend their evenings spinning on the wheel.
During the day, they would carry a drop spindle with them.
Spinning was the only means of turning raw wool, cotton or flax into thread,
which could then be woven into cloth.

As always it was a wonderful day of food, fun,
lots of laughter and spinning.
