Working Hands

Fluff with recycled bits..

Spun into yarn..

strung on a loom..

has made fabric.

It will never cease to amaze me what working hands can do.

Morning Glory and Marigolds

The first attempt with the faux rolags didn't work out so well..

So.. back to the drawing board.

These little soldiers did the trick!

Added a few extra soldiers in-between with some bright yellow
and ended up with
"Morning Glory and Marigolds"

Approximately 85 yards of hand dyed merino wool...

..with a bit of blended recycled sari silk..

for some cheerful thick and thin fun!

Yarn Along..

The Antarktis is actually finished, but not blocked yet so I'll share that next week.
Today I had a second lesson on the loom... warping!

I chose to try weaving this fun yarn that I spun over the summer.  It is a blend of hand dyed fiber plus any other little bits I could blend in... including recycled sweater yarn, silk, taffeta from the thrift store.. those kind of things.

The plan is to weave with one of the singles that is still hanging around here unplied from Spinzilla.
It needed the twist set first.
For now the weft yarn it is drying next to the wood stove ~

Can't wait to start on it tomorrow!

As far as reading ~ I've got my nose in a few books right now.

Currently enjoying this on the kindle via free library loan.
Anyone else enjoy library books electronically without leaving home?

Hand • made (hand • meyd) adjective Made by hand, rather than by machine

It is with sincere love and gratitude that I share this with you today.

Some of my hand spun, handcrafted yarns.

Created with love.

A little piece of me lives in each strand of fiber.

Every inch passed through my fingers ~ start to finish.

Time to spread my wings and leave the nest.

I am so very grateful.

~ Thank you for sharing this with me ~

Today there is rain.
Gray and warm.

Kinda feeling like this..

Gray skies with golden oak leaves on the ground.

So I thought I'd try making some "twigs"

or faux logs..

or fake rolags..

Hand dyed merino blended with some sari silk.
NOT in uniform thickness ~ hence the name "twig".

Warm and gray.
Wonder how they will spin?

What is going on outside your window that inspires you today?

Yarn along..

Today I had my first real weaving lesson..

"Real" because after weaving this on a board with nails in it
I wasn't so sure weaving was going to be for me.

Turns out I was wrong.
(Thanks Carol and Marilyn and Chris and Ann ..xo)

After spending a lovely afternoon at the yarn shop..

I left with this..

.. a perfectly lovely, not so perfect, first weaving project.

Next week ~ learning to warp the loom.
The loom we used was an adorable little Schacht Cricket Loom.
Easy to use and perfectly portable.

Starting to read this..

The library list was long and well.. I just couldn't wait.

It's been a year..

It's been a year.
A year since I picked up a drop spindle for the first time..

I still have these cards pinned in my studio.
A record of first yarns spun.

It has been one amazing year!

New friends, fiber festivals, learning,
exploring new fibers, and tools.

Spindles, carding,
then a wheel, then another wheel.

Feeling like it is time for a new space.
I hope you will join me here at Wren House.

It is inspired after a friendly, energetic house wren
nesting outside my bedroom window.

Yarn makes me sing..!!
